Insulin resistance and weight loss

Insulin resistance and weight loss

Mon Aug 10 2009

Carbohydrates that metabolise quickly, also known as ‘high glycaemic index’ (GI) foods (e.g. sugars and starchy foods, such as bread - especially with yeast, rice, pasta and potatoes) increase insulin production that disables fat burning. If you constantly have high levels of insulin due to a high GI diet, you can develop a condition known as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance results in excess weight and obesity. A healthy diet can help regulate insulin levels, improve blood sugar levels and reduce excess weight. By using the ‘palm rule’ of eating meals where the protein portion is no bigger than the palm of your hand and the vegetable portion is a heaped palm, you can achieve results toward better health. Keep a food diary and observe your progress. Remember consistency is the key.
