Staying well this winter

Staying well this winter

Fri Aug 7 2009

It seems the onset of winter always brings more than woolly scarves, hot chocolates and long coats. With the change of season come the regular bouts of influenza, colds, runny nose, sinus congestion, asthma, hay fever, allergies, lethargy and sore throats etc. According to Ayurveda, germs and ultimately disease will not prevail unless the environment is desirable for them to flourish. This is true for those concerned with the prevalence of Swine Flu, if you are healthy, you will not need to worry. Keep yourself and your family healthy this winter by boosting your immune system and achieving better health. Ayurveda is a system of health personalised to each individual’s constitution so come and see Jo Formosa to find out how to build your and your family’s immunity. Some general tips will surely help build immunity & help the body to flush toxins from your system:

  1. Drink the following ginger tea on rising and 20min before meals to detoxify the system and stimulate digestion that will enable better absorption of nutrients. Remember that vitamin and mineral supplements are of no use if your body has poor digestion and absorption.

    ½ tspn grated ginger
    1 tbs lemon juice
    ½ tspn honey
(added to warm, not boiling hot, water)

  2. Avoid the following foods: cold foods and drinks especially ice cream & cold milk (cereal), breads, cheese, white sugar, bananas, deep fried/oily foods, processed and refined foods (snack bars, tinned food, frozen foods, packaged foods).
  3. Eat fresh produce rich in vitamins, favour warm, cooked foods like soup, dal and rice, stir fry, curries, porridge, etc.
  4. Take immune boosting herbs like Chyawanprash, Kersi Kalp and Herbovit.
  5. Regular gentle exercise like walking, yoga & cycling will encourage the body’s natural detoxification process. Remember to only exercise to half of your capacity to avoid overexertion & depletion of the body.
